Mike on Keeping Q-Line Connected
What is your role at Q-Line? How long have you been with Q-Line, and what did you do prior to working here?
I’m the Team Lead, IT Systems Specialist, and I’ve been with Q-Line for almost three years. Before joining the team, I was a longtime restaurant owner, operating multiple locations under two different franchises. I also started my own IT company, supporting point-of-sale and surveillance systems for more than 150 locations across Saskatchewan and another 12 in Alberta.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your role? What are the key responsibilities you manage?
My role includes overseeing, leading, and mentoring our team of IT Systems Specialists to ensure issues are resolved efficiently. I assign tasks, provide technical guidance and training, and manage Q-Line’s systems including servers, computers, phones, and networking infrastructure. I also help plan and implement projects designed to improve operational efficiency and productivity.
What do you find most rewarding about your work at Q-Line?
I enjoy helping people and resolving issues that make their day-to-day work easier. I also take pride in leading and sharing my knowledge with our team.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?
The biggest challenge is balancing leadership duties with daily responsibilities and larger projects. I manage this by prioritizing issues, planning effectively, delegating tasks, and staying on top of time management.
How do you collaborate with other team members and drivers to ensure success?
I collaborate through clear communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. By addressing issues quickly and sharing feedback, we’re able to work efficiently and reach successful outcomes.
What qualities or skills do you think are essential to thrive in the trucking industry?
Clear communication, problem-solving, time management, adaptability, attention to detail, and a good understanding of safety regulations are all key. Patience, resilience, and strong customer service also go a long way.
Can you share a memorable moment or accomplishment from your time at Q-Line?
One of the most memorable moments so far has been traveling to Yellowknife for the networking and surveillance upgrade project. I didn’t have much free time, but I met some great people and had the chance to visit a place I likely never would have otherwise. I hope to return one day and experience more of what Yellowknife has to offer.
What hobbies or interests do you enjoy outside of work?
Both of my daughters play box and field lacrosse. My oldest coached the female team at the Canada Games in 2022, and my youngest is excelling as a goalie. I coach and help run the local Saskatoon Box Lacrosse Association, serve as General Manager of our A-Level Saskatchewan SWAT Lacrosse Program, and coach at all levels including U17. I also coach nationally with Team Saskatchewan and have served as General Manager for a Canada Games male team.
What is one interesting or surprising fact about yourself that others might not know?
I purchased my first restaurant franchise in 2003 and became the youngest franchisee in North America at the time.
What’s the most unique or unusual job you’ve held in the past?
My family owned a commercial glass installation business, and I started working there during holidays and summers as a teenager. Some of the more memorable projects were at the Saskatoon Auto Mall and Preston Crossing. I eventually left the family business when I bought my first restaurant.
How do you stay motivated and positive in a fast-paced industry like trucking?
I stay focused by setting goals, staying organized, and maintaining a strong work ethic. I embrace challenges, support my team, and find satisfaction in keeping operations running smoothly and solving issues as they come up.
How has your time at Q-Line contributed to your personal and professional growth?
My time here has helped improve my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. I’ve gained valuable experience managing a team, overseeing system performance, and handling complex technical issues, which has strengthened my ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
