Mattaus on Keeping Freight Moving

What is your role at Q-Line? How long have you been with Q-Line, and what did you do prior to working here?
I'm the Supervisor of Deck Sales and have been with Q-Line for just under four years. I originally joined as a Sales Representative and transitioned into the supervisor role as I grew within the company. Before joining Q-Line, I worked in car sales for a short time and was a service technician before that.

Can you walk us through a typical day in your role? What are the key responsibilities you manage?
A typical day starts with emails, voicemails, and responding to customers. I handle multiple quote requests each day and manage the operations of each load to ensure it’s picked up and delivered smoothly and on time. I also train and support other Key Account Representatives and Coordinators by sharing insight into current market rates, helping with operational challenges, and guiding future load execution. On top of that, I prospect for new business through cold calling, emails, and relationship building.

What do you find most rewarding about your work at Q-Line?
I love helping others learn and grow in their roles. I also enjoy seeing extremely oversized loads move and deliver successfully.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?
Operational challenges like truck breakdowns, availability, and customs issues are common. I overcome them by staying on top of truck availability and making sure updates to customers are honest and timely so they can plan accordingly. Another challenge is pricing conversations. In those cases, I explain how our rates are built and stand behind the service we provide.

How do you collaborate with other team members and drivers to ensure success?
I make sure everyone involved is informed about requirements and instructions, whether through a group email or a quick meeting. I also check in with drivers directly to offer clarification or assistance when needed.

What qualities or skills do you think are essential to thrive in the trucking industry?

Being a quick learner and able to adapt quickly is important. Transportation moves fast, and plans or market conditions can change at any moment.

Can you share a memorable moment or accomplishment from your time at Q-Line?
In my first full year with the company, I managed over 11 million dollars in sales.

What hobbies or interests do you enjoy outside of work?
I like to work out, play paintball, and volleyball. I also enjoy spending time with my wife and lead a young adults group at my church.

What is one interesting or surprising fact about yourself that others might not know?
I’ve lived in both New Zealand and Costa Rica.

What’s the most unique or unusual job you’ve held in the past?
I worked as a Warehouse Manager for a feed company that sold feed to Hutterite colonies for their chicken, hog, and dairy barns.

How do you stay motivated and positive in a fast-paced industry like trucking?
I take each day as it comes and focus on doing my best. Being honest and respectful goes a long way.

How has your time at Q-Line contributed to your personal and professional growth?
My time at Q-Line has helped me improve my time management, computer skills, and customer relationship skills. It's also given me experience working with a large team and helping others get better at what they do.
